How to visit Petra with children
Petra works well with kids 6 and up who can walk 3-4 miles on uneven terrain. Book a 2-day Jordan Pass, start early to beat heat and crowds, and plan for shorter walking distances than adults typically cover. Bring lots of water and snacks.
- Get the 2-day Jordan Pass before you go. Buy the 2-day Jordan Pass online for 77 JOD per person. Kids under 12 enter free but still need the pass. This covers Petra entry plus 40+ other sites in Jordan. Much cheaper than buying Petra tickets separately (50 JOD for 1 day, 55 JOD for 2 days).
- Start at 6 AM when gates open. Arrive at the visitor center by 6 AM. Petra gets brutally hot by 10 AM in summer, and crowded by 9 AM year-round. Kids handle the walking much better in cool morning air. Park at the main lot (3 JOD) or walk from Wadi Musa town.
- Walk the Siq to Treasury (1.2 km, 20 minutes). This narrow canyon walk to Petra's famous facade is magical for kids. The path is mostly flat but uneven sandstone. Point out carved water channels and the dramatic reveal at the end. Most 6-year-olds handle this easily.
- Explore the Treasury area and Street of Facades. Let kids touch the carved rock and imagine ancient life here. The Street of Facades has tombs kids can safely explore. Skip the Treasury interior - it's just an empty room and costs extra. This area offers great photo ops without much additional walking.
- Decide on your ambitious goal. Monastery requires 800+ steep steps and 2 hours round trip - only attempt with athletic kids 10+. High Place of Sacrifice is 45 minutes up but has incredible views. Royal Tombs are closer but still require climbing. Choose one based on your kids' energy and walking ability.
- Head back by early afternoon. The walk back through the Siq takes 20-30 minutes when tired. Plan to leave by 1 PM to avoid the worst afternoon heat. Kids get cranky fast when overheated and dehydrated in this desert environment.
- What's the minimum age for Petra?
- Kids 6+ who can walk 3-4 miles on uneven terrain do fine. Younger kids struggle with the distances and rocky paths. No strollers allowed - too rough and narrow.
- Can we hire donkeys for the kids?
- Yes, donkey rides cost 5 JOD per child for short distances. Available from Treasury to Royal Tombs, and at the start of Monastery trail. Kids love this but donkeys can't access all areas.
- Is Petra by Night worth it with children?
- Only if your kids are 8+ and can handle staying up past bedtime. It's 8:30-10:30 PM, walking the Siq by candlelight to see Treasury lit up. Beautiful but long for little ones.
- How much water should we bring?
- 2 liters per person minimum, more in summer. Water bottles inside cost 2 JOD each. Kids dehydrate fast in this desert climate. Bring electrolyte packets too.
- What if kids get tired halfway through?
- Plan shorter routes than typical adult itineraries. There are rest areas with shade near Treasury and Royal Tombs. Don't attempt Monastery unless kids are strong hikers - it's 800+ steps up.
