How to Cross Overland from Mexico into Guatemala
Cross at La Mesilla-Ciudad Cuauhtémoc border (most popular) or El Carmen-Talismán. Get your Mexico exit stamp, walk across, get Guatemala entry stamp. Have passport, proof of onward travel, and $10-20 USD for potential fees. The process takes 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on crowds.
- Choose your border crossing. La Mesilla-Ciudad Cuauhtémoc is the main route from San Cristóbal de las Casas (3 hours by bus). El Carmen-Talismán is faster from Tapachula (45 minutes). Both are open 6 AM to 10 PM daily.
- Get to the Mexican border town. Take a bus or colectivo to Ciudad Cuauhtémoc or Talismán. From San Cristóbal, ADO buses run hourly to the border for 80-120 pesos. From Tapachula, frequent buses cost 25-40 pesos.
- Complete Mexico exit procedures. Find the Mexican immigration office (look for 'Migración' signs). Present your passport and tourist card (FMM). Get your exit stamp. This is mandatory - you'll have problems leaving Guatemala later without it.
- Walk across no man's land. Cross the bridge or walk the 200-500 meters between countries. Ignore money changers here - rates are terrible. Keep moving to Guatemalan immigration.
- Enter Guatemala. Present passport to Guatemalan immigration. You may need proof of onward travel (bus ticket, flight confirmation). Most nationalities get 90 days free. Pay any required fees - usually none for tourists but have $20 USD just in case.
- Continue to your destination. From La Mesilla, buses to Huehuetenango run every 30 minutes (1.5 hours, 15 quetzales). From El Carmen, frequent transport to Quetzaltenango. Change money at official exchange houses in town, not at the border.
- Can I cross at night?
- No. All Guatemala-Mexico border crossings close at 10 PM and open at 6 AM. Plan your arrival accordingly.
- Do I need yellow fever vaccination?
- Not required for Mexico-Guatemala crossing. Only required if you're coming from a yellow fever endemic country.
- Can I bring my rental car across?
- Extremely complicated and expensive. You need special permits, insurance, and paperwork. Much easier to return the car and rent again in Guatemala.
- What if I lost my Mexico tourist card?
- Go to the migration office in the nearest large Mexican city before heading to the border. You'll need to pay a fine (around $500 pesos) and get replacement paperwork.
- Is the border safe?
- Generally yes during daylight hours. Stay aware of your belongings and avoid changing money with street vendors. Stick to official immigration areas.
