How to Navigate Mexico City Airport Efficiently

Mexico City Airport (MEX) has two terminals connected by the Aerotren. Allow 90 minutes for international connections, use Terminal 1 for most international flights, and download the airport app for real-time gate info. Immigration moves fast but customs can be slow during peak hours.

  1. Know which terminal you need. Terminal 1 handles most international flights (Delta, United, American, European carriers). Terminal 2 is mainly Aeromexico and Star Alliance partners. Check your boarding pass or airline app before leaving home.
  2. Use the Aerotren for terminal transfers. The free train runs every 4 minutes between terminals and takes 4 minutes. Follow blue Aerotren signs. If you have checked bags, you cannot use this for connections - you must exit and re-enter.
  3. Navigate immigration strategically. Use the furthest right lanes which typically move faster. Have your passport and FMM form ready. Mexican citizens and residents have separate lines. Process takes 2-5 minutes per person.
  4. Handle the customs lottery system. Press the button at customs. Green light means walk through, red means bag inspection. If red, stay calm and cooperate. Keep receipts for electronics over $500 USD to prove they're personal items.
  5. Exit efficiently to ground transportation. Ignore taxi touts immediately outside customs. Walk straight to official taxi counters or follow signs to Metro Line 5 (Terminal 1) or Airport Bus stops. The Metro costs 5 pesos and runs until midnight.
How long do connections take at MEX?
Allow 90 minutes minimum for international connections, 60 minutes for domestic. If changing terminals with checked bags, allow 3 hours as you must exit and re-enter security.
Is there free WiFi?
Yes, free WiFi throughout both terminals. Connect to 'Mexico Airport WiFi' and register with email or phone number. Connection is reliable and fast.
Where can I store luggage?
Left luggage services available in both terminals near arrivals. Costs about 100 pesos for 4 hours, 200 pesos for 24 hours. Services operate 24/7.
Can I walk between terminals?
No, you must use the Aerotren or take a bus outside security. The terminals are not within walking distance. The Aerotren is free and runs frequently.
What if I miss my connection?
Go directly to your airline's customer service desk in the terminal. Most airlines will rebook you on the next available flight at no charge if the delay was their fault.
