How to Dive with Manta Rays in Maldives
Book a dive trip to Baa Atoll or South Ari Atoll between May and November when manta rays gather at cleaning stations. Stay at a resort with dive center access or join liveaboard trips. Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll offers the highest concentration, but requires advance permits.
- Choose your timing. Visit between May and November during southwest monsoon when plankton blooms attract manta rays. Peak season is June to October. Avoid December to April when rays migrate deeper.
- Pick your location. Baa Atoll has the highest manta concentration at Hanifaru Bay and nearby sites. South Ari Atoll offers year-round opportunities at Manta Point. North Male Atoll has occasional sightings but lower success rates.
- Get permits for Hanifaru Bay. Hanifaru Bay requires advance permits through EPA Maldives or your resort. Only 80 people allowed daily. Book 2-3 days ahead during peak season. Entry fee is $50 per person.
- Book accommodation with dive access. Stay at resorts in Baa or Ari Atoll with PADI dive centers. Alternatively, join 7-day liveaboard trips that visit multiple manta sites. Day trips from Male are possible but limit your options.
- Plan multiple dive attempts. Book 3-4 dives across different sites to maximize chances. Morning dives (8-10am) often have best visibility. Afternoon dives (2-4pm) can have more active feeding behavior.
- Follow manta etiquette underwater. Stay 3 meters away from mantas. Never touch or chase them. Move slowly and let them approach you. No flash photography. Stay at cleaning stations where mantas come to you.
- Do I need to be an experienced diver?
- Open Water certification minimum required. Advanced Open Water recommended for better buoyancy control around mantas. Most manta sites are 15-30 meter depths with mild currents.
- What's the success rate for seeing mantas?
- Hanifaru Bay has 80-90% success rate during peak season. Other Baa Atoll sites average 60-70%. South Ari Atoll runs about 50-60% year-round.
- Can I snorkel with mantas instead of diving?
- Yes, Hanifaru Bay allows snorkeling when manta rays feed at surface during plankton blooms. Same permits required. Snorkeling gear available at most resorts.
- How big are Maldivian manta rays?
- Reef mantas in Maldives average 3-4 meter wingspan. Occasional giant oceanic mantas reach 5-7 meters. Both species frequent the same cleaning stations.
