How to Visit Machu Picchu Without the Crowds

Visit during shoulder season (April-May or September-October), enter through the Huayna Picchu gate at 6am, or take the less popular afternoon slot (1-2pm). Book the Inca Trail alternative routes like Salkantay or Choquequirao for crowd-free approaches.

  1. Book the earliest or latest entry slots. Reserve the 6am-7am morning slot or 1pm-2pm afternoon entry online at machupicchu.gob.pe. Morning slots fill up fastest, but afternoon has 60% fewer people after tour groups leave.
  2. Choose shoulder season dates. Visit April-May or September-October. Avoid June-August (peak season) and December-March (rainy season). May and September have the best weather-to-crowd ratio.
  3. Take alternative approach routes. Hike the Salkantay Trek (5 days) or Choquequirao Trek (7-9 days) instead of the Classic Inca Trail. These routes see 10% of the Inca Trail traffic but end at Machu Picchu.
  4. Enter through Huayna Picchu gate. Buy the Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu combo ticket. This puts you in a separate, smaller entry group and gives access to mountain views most tourists skip.
  5. Stay overnight in Aguas Calientes. Sleep in town the night before your visit. Take the first bus up at 5:30am to be among the first 200 people through the gates. Day-trippers from Cusco arrive after 8am.
  6. Explore the outer terraces first. Head immediately to the agricultural terraces on the south side when you enter. Most groups go straight to the classic viewpoint, leaving the terraces empty for the first hour.
How far ahead do I need to book tickets?
Book 2-3 months ahead for peak season (June-August), 3-4 weeks for shoulder season. Huayna Picchu combo tickets sell out fastest.
Can I buy tickets at the gate?
No. All Machu Picchu tickets must be purchased online in advance at machupicchu.gob.pe. No same-day sales.
What if it rains during my visit?
Site stays open in rain. Bring waterproof gear and expect slippery stone steps. Morning visits have better weather odds during rainy season (December-March).
How long can I stay inside?
4 hours maximum from your entry time. No re-entry allowed. Plan to see the main complex, then choose between Huayna Picchu hike (2-3 hours) or Machu Picchu Mountain (3-4 hours).
