How to spend 24 hours in Vientiane during a visa run
Use your visa run layover to see Pha That Luang temple, walk the Mekong riverfront, and eat proper Lao food at the morning market. Most visa runs give you 12-24 hours in the city, which is enough to see the main sights and get a feel for Vientiane without rushing.
- Drop your bags and get oriented. Most visa run buses drop you near the Thai embassy area on Thadeua Road. Find a guesthouse or hotel near the embassy district (20,000-40,000 kip per night). The city center is walkable, but rent a bicycle (10,000 kip/day) or use tuk-tuks (15,000-20,000 kip per ride) to cover more ground.
- Hit Pha That Luang in the afternoon. Take a tuk-tuk to Pha That Luang, Laos' most important Buddhist monument. Entry costs 30,000 kip. Spend 45 minutes walking around the golden stupa and smaller temples. The late afternoon light makes for better photos, and it's cooler than midday.
- Walk the Mekong riverfront at sunset. Head to the Mekong riverfront promenade before 6 PM. The sunset over the river and Thailand beyond is worth the trip. Street food vendors set up along the riverbank selling grilled fish and sticky rice. Grab dinner here for 25,000-35,000 kip.
- Start early at Talat Sao morning market. Get to Talat Sao (Morning Market) by 7 AM for the best food selection. Try foe (Lao noodle soup) for 15,000 kip and sticky rice with various sides. The market also sells textiles and handicrafts if you want souvenirs. Most food stalls close by 10 AM.
- Visit Wat Si Saket before departure. Wat Si Saket is the oldest temple in Vientiane and houses thousands of Buddha statues. It's a 10-minute walk from the morning market and costs 10,000 kip to enter. Allow 30 minutes to see the main hall and surrounding cloisters before heading back for your visa run transport.
- Can I leave my luggage somewhere during the day?
- Many guesthouses near the embassy district will hold luggage for day guests for 20,000-30,000 kip. Some visa run operators also provide luggage storage.
- Is one day enough to see Vientiane properly?
- You can see the main temples, eat good Lao food, and get a feel for the city in 24 hours. It's not comprehensive, but it's enough to make the visa run worthwhile beyond just paperwork.
- How do I get back to the border for my return transport?
- Visa run buses typically pick up from the same drop-off point. Confirm the exact pickup time and location with your operator. Allow 30 minutes to get back from the city center.
- What if the temples are closed?
- Most temples open at 6 AM and close at 6 PM. Pha That Luang sometimes closes 12-1 PM for lunch. The morning market and riverfront are always accessible as backup plans.
