How to use Kyoto's bus system effectively
Buy a daily bus pass for 600 yen, board from the back door, and take a numbered ticket. Ring the bell one stop before your destination and pay when exiting from the front. Download Google Translate with camera function to read bus stop names in Japanese.
- Buy your bus pass at Kyoto Station. Head to the bus ticket counter on the first floor of Kyoto Station. Buy a daily bus pass (Kyoto City Bus All-Day Pass) for 600 yen. It pays for itself after just 2 rides since single trips cost 230 yen. The pass works on all city buses but not on Keihan or JR buses.
- Find your bus stop and route number. Kyoto bus stops display route numbers in both Japanese and Arabic numerals. Popular tourist routes include Bus 100 (Golden Pavilion circuit), Bus 206 (eastern temples), and Bus 5 (Fushimi Inari). Use Google Maps or the Kyoto City Official Travel Guide app to confirm your route.
- Board from the back door. Enter through the rear door and take a numbered ticket from the machine. If you have a day pass, just show it to the driver when boarding. Find a seat or hold onto the handrails - buses can be crowded during peak tourist hours (9-11am and 3-5pm).
- Track your stop using the display. Watch the electronic display at the front of the bus showing upcoming stops in Japanese and sometimes English. Press the stop button (located on poles throughout the bus) one stop before your destination. The button makes a distinctive chime sound.
- Exit and pay at the front. Move toward the front door as your stop approaches. If using individual tickets, drop exact change (230 yen) into the fare box or insert your ticket. If using a day pass, show it to the driver. Exit through the front door only.
- What if I don't have exact change for the bus?
- Use the change machine at the front of the bus before paying. It accepts 1000 yen bills and gives you the exact coins needed. Some buses also accept IC cards like Suica or Pasmo.
- Do Kyoto buses run on time?
- Generally yes, but traffic can cause delays especially during cherry blossom season (April) and autumn foliage season (November). Add 15-20 minutes buffer time for important appointments.
- Are there English announcements on buses?
- Some tourist routes have English announcements for major stops, but don't count on it. Download the Kyoto City Bus app or use Google Maps with location services for real-time tracking.
- Can I use my JR Pass on Kyoto city buses?
- No. JR Pass only works on JR trains. City buses are operated by Kyoto City Transportation Bureau and require separate payment or the city bus day pass.
