How to navigate Kyoto by bus

Use the Kyoto City Bus All-Day Pass to save money and always board through the back door and exit at the front. Pay your fare or tap your IC card at the front machine right before you step off the bus.

  1. Identify your bus line. Look for the bus number on the LED display at the front and side of the bus. Numbers starting with 'R' or 'M' are Raku buses, which are designed for tourists and stop at major sights.
  2. Board at the back. Wait for the bus to come to a full stop. Board through the rear door. Do not pay when you get on.
  3. Locate your stop. Watch the screen above the driver or listen to the automated announcements. When your destination is announced, press the 'stop' button on the handrail or wall immediately.
  4. Exit and pay at the front. Walk to the front of the bus. If you have an IC card (Suica/Pasmo/Icoca), tap it on the reader next to the driver. If you have a flat-fare ticket or are paying cash, deposit it into the box next to the driver.
