How to behave respectfully at Kyoto temples
Follow basic temple etiquette: bow before entering, remove hats and sunglasses, speak quietly, don't touch anything unless specifically allowed, and turn off camera flash. Most temples allow photography in outdoor areas but prohibit it inside main halls.
- Approach the temple gate properly. Bow slightly before passing through the main gate (sanmon). Walk to the side of the path, not down the center - the middle is reserved for deities.
- Purify yourself at the water basin. Use the wooden ladles at the temizuya (water basin) to rinse your hands and mouth. Pour water over your left hand, then right hand, then rinse your mouth (don't drink or put the ladle to your lips).
- Remove appropriate items before entering buildings. Take off hats, sunglasses, and shoes before entering any temple building. Place shoes in the provided racks or carry them in a plastic bag.
- Follow photography rules strictly. Turn off camera flash everywhere. Check for no-photography signs before taking pictures inside buildings - most prohibit indoor photography entirely. Outdoor courtyards and gardens are usually fine.
- Maintain quiet, respectful behavior. Speak in whispers or not at all inside temple buildings. Don't point at statues or artifacts. Keep hands to yourself unless there's a designated touching area (rare).
- Show respect during prayer time. If monks are conducting ceremonies, observe silently from designated areas. Don't walk through prayer spaces or interrupt rituals.
- Can I wear shorts or tank tops to temples?
- Avoid shorts, short skirts, and sleeveless tops. While not always strictly enforced, covering shoulders and knees shows proper respect.
- Is it okay to take photos of monks?
- Don't photograph monks without permission. If they're part of a public ceremony you can usually photograph from a distance, but never use flash or get close.
- What if I accidentally break a rule?
- Apologize with a bow. Temple staff are usually understanding with foreign visitors who show they're trying to be respectful.
- Should I leave a donation?
- Donations are appreciated but not required. If you do donate, place coins gently in the offering box and bow before and after.
- Can I bring my children?
- Yes, but keep them close and quiet inside temple buildings. Many temples have gardens where they can move around more freely.
