Navigating Tokyo Trains with a Stroller
Use elevators exclusively, which are marked with blue signage, and avoid trains between 7:30-9:30 AM and 5:00-7:00 PM. Always board the carriages with a designated multi-purpose space, usually found at the ends of the train cars.
- Identify Elevator Locations. Look for the blue elevator symbols on station maps. Most major stations have them, but some older, smaller stations only have stairs or narrow escalators. Check the 'Station Map' on the Japan Transit by Navitime app before you depart.
- Use the Multi-Purpose Spaces. Look for the wheelchair/stroller symbol on the outside of the train cars. These are located at the ends of each carriage. Position your stroller here, lock the wheels, and stay with it at all times.
- Navigate the Gates. Do not use the narrow automated turnstiles. Look for the 'Wide Gate' (usually manned by a station attendant). Simply walk through and show your IC card or ticket to the attendant.
- Avoid Rush Hour. Tokyo trains are dangerously crowded during peak hours. If you must travel with a stroller, plan your trips between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM.
- Can I leave my stroller on the train?
- No, you must keep it with you at all times. If the train is too crowded, you must fold the stroller or wait for the next one.
- Are escalators stroller-safe?
- Generally, no. Most Japanese stations advise against taking strollers on escalators. Stick to elevators to avoid accidents.
- What if the elevator is broken?
- Ask a station attendant for help. They will often manually operate a lift or assist you in carrying the stroller up the stairs.
