How to make the most of a layover at Istanbul Airport (IST)

If your layover is under 6 hours, stay within the terminal to use the YOTEL or relax in the lounges. If you have 7+ hours, take the HAVAIST shuttle or a taxi to the city center to see the Sultanahmet sights.

  1. Check your visa status. Before leaving the airport, ensure you have an e-Visa if required for your nationality. You can apply for this online in about 10 minutes, but it is much faster to have it finished before you land.
  2. Clear immigration for long layovers. If your layover is 7 hours or longer, follow signs for 'Passport Control.' Be prepared for queues; even with an e-Visa, it can take 45 minutes to get through during peak hours.
  3. Use the HAVAIST shuttle for city access. Skip expensive taxis. Follow the 'Public Transport' signs to the HAVAIST bus stop at the -2 level. Take the HVIST-12 line to Beyazıt Square for $5 USD; it takes about 90 minutes depending on traffic.
  4. Store your luggage. If you don't want to drag your bags through the city, use the 'Left Luggage' office located at the Arrivals floor. Costs are roughly $8-$12 USD per bag depending on size.
  5. Stay airside for short layovers. If you have less than 5 hours, do not leave the transit area. Visit the 'IGA Lounge' or the 'SkyTeam Lounge' for showers and buffet food. Entry is roughly $70-$90 USD if not included in your ticket class.
Is the free 'Touristanbul' still available?
Yes, Turkish Airlines offers free tours for passengers with layovers between 6 and 24 hours. Check their desk in the arrival hall immediately after customs.
Can I walk to the city from the airport?
No. The airport is roughly 40km away from the city center. You must use a shuttle, taxi, or pre-booked transfer.
