Navigating Jakarta's Public Transportation System

Use a single 'e-money' card or a digital wallet app to tap in and out of the TransJakarta bus rapid transit and the MRT/LRT rail networks. Stick to these official systems to avoid traffic congestion, as they operate on dedicated lanes or tracks.

  1. Get an e-money card. Purchase a Mandiri e-money, BNI TapCash, or Flazz card at any Indomaret or Alfamart convenience store. You will pay approximately 50,000 IDR for the card itself, which includes some credit.
  2. Download the Apps. Install 'Tije' for TransJakarta routes and 'MRT-J' to check schedules and buy QR tickets. Having Google Maps open is essential for real-time bus arrival tracking.
  3. Master the TransJakarta Bus. Enter through the raised platforms (bus stops). Tap your card on the turnstile to enter. Look for the 'koridor' (corridor) signs; one card is valid for one person only.
  4. Use the MRT and LRT. The MRT (North-South line) and LRT are the cleanest, fastest ways to travel. Tap in at the gate, ride the train, and ensure you tap out at your destination gate to finalize the fare deduction.
  5. Final Mile with Ride-hailing. Use Gojek or Grab for the 'final mile' from the station to your specific building. Select 'Bike' (ojek) if you need to zip through heavy traffic.
Can I pay for the bus with cash?
No. TransJakarta and MRT stations are strictly cashless. You must have an e-money card or a specific transport app QR code.
Is public transport safe at night?
Yes, it is generally safe. However, always remain aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded bus terminals after 9:00 PM.
What is the worst time to travel?
Avoid 7:00–9:00 AM and 5:00–7:00 PM. Jakarta traffic is legendary, and even public transport gets extremely packed during these windows.
