Navigating Indian Trains as a Couple
Book your tickets at least 60 days in advance using the IRCTC website or the ConfirmTkt app to ensure you get side-by-side berths. Always opt for 2AC or 1AC class for comfort, privacy, and better security.
- Set up your IRCTC account early. The official Indian Railways portal (IRCTC) requires an account. If you are a foreign national, use the international user registration process. It takes up to 48 hours to activate, so do this weeks before your trip.
- Choose the right class. Avoid General and Sleeper class. Book 2AC (air-conditioned with curtains) or 1AC (private locking cabins). For couples, request two 'Side Lower' and 'Side Upper' berths to have your own semi-private nook.
- Use the PNR status check. If your ticket is waitlisted, download the ConfirmTkt app to check the probability of it being confirmed. If it doesn't confirm by the time of departure, you cannot board with that ticket.
- Manage your luggage. Bring two sturdy bike locks or cable locks. Even in 2AC, you need to chain your backpacks to the metal rings under the lower berths for peace of mind while you sleep.
- Know your boarding protocol. Check the coach position on the platform charts before the train arrives. Trains can be 20+ coaches long; be standing exactly where your coach will stop so you can board quickly.
- Can we get a private cabin?
- Only 1AC class offers a 2-person or 4-person locking cabin. It is significantly more expensive but provides the most privacy for a couple.
- Are the trains safe for couples?
- Yes, Indian trains are generally safe. Stick to higher classes (AC), keep your valuables locked, and avoid traveling at night if you are feeling unsure.
- What if I get hungry?
- Vendors walk the aisles constantly selling chai, water, and snacks. You can also pre-order meals via the 'e-Catering' section of the IRCTC app to have food delivered to your seat at major stations.
