How to Use Germany's Train System
Germany's Deutsche Bahn (DB) runs punctual, clean trains connecting every major city. Buy tickets online or at stations, validate paper tickets before boarding, and choose between high-speed ICE trains for long distances or regional trains for local travel.
- Download the DB Navigator app. Get the official Deutsche Bahn app before you travel. It shows real-time schedules, platform changes, and lets you buy tickets directly on your phone. Works offline once downloaded.
- Understand the train types. ICE (white trains) are fastest for long distances, cost more, require reservations for busy routes. RE/RB regional trains are slower, cheaper, no reservations needed. S-Bahn is city metro.
- Buy your ticket. Online tickets are cheapest—book 3-7 days ahead for Sparpreis deals (starting €17.90). At stations, use red DB machines (English option available) or ticket counters. Flexpreis tickets cost more but allow any train.
- Validate paper tickets. If you bought a paper ticket at the station, find the small red validation machines on platforms or in train cars. Insert ticket, stamp appears. Digital tickets don't need validation.
- Find your platform and car. Check departure boards (white text on blue background) for platform numbers. ICE trains have car-specific platform markings—look for A, B, C sections marked on the ground.
- Board and show your ticket. Get on any car unless you have a seat reservation. Conductor checks tickets during journey—have your phone or paper ticket ready. No ticket gates like UK trains.
- What if my train is delayed?
- Delays over 60 minutes qualify for 25% refund, over 120 minutes get 50%. File claim through DB Navigator app or at ticket counter within 30 days.
- Can I bring luggage on trains?
- Yes, free luggage. Store overhead or under seats. Large suitcases go in designated areas at car ends. No size restrictions but be reasonable—you must handle it yourself.
- Do I need seat reservations?
- Optional on ICE trains (€4.50 extra), recommended for Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Not available on regional trains. Reserved seats show digital display above.
