How to get through airport security quickly on international trips

Prepare your documents in advance, wear minimal metal accessories, pack liquids in a clear bag, and choose TSA PreCheck or Clear if available. Most delays happen because travelers aren't ready when they reach the checkpoint.

  1. Check in online and get your boarding pass on your phone. Check in 24 hours before departure and download your airline's app. Mobile boarding passes are faster than printed ones and you can't lose them.
  2. Pack your carry-on strategically. Put electronics larger than a phone in easily accessible pockets. Keep liquids in a clear quart bag at the top. Remove chargers and cables from your bag entirely if possible.
  3. Dress for security. Wear slip-on shoes, minimal jewelry, and a belt with no metal buckle. Empty all pockets completely before you get in line, not at the checkpoint.
  4. Have documents ready. Keep your passport and boarding pass in your hand, not buried in a bag or pocket. For international flights, have any required visas or health documents easily accessible.
  5. Use expedited security when possible. TSA PreCheck costs $78 for 5 years and lets you keep shoes and light jackets on. Global Entry ($100 for 5 years) includes PreCheck plus faster customs. Clear ($189/year) scans your biometrics to skip ID checking.
  6. Know your airport's layout. Check your airport's website for security wait times and checkpoint locations. Some airports have less crowded checkpoints in different terminals or concourses.
  7. Arrive at the right time. For international flights, arrive 3 hours early from major US airports, 2 hours from smaller ones. Check your airport's current average wait times online before leaving home.
Can I bring food through international security?
Solid foods are fine, but anything liquid or gel-like (yogurt, peanut butter, soup) must follow the 3-1-1 rule. Baby food and medically necessary liquids have exceptions with additional screening.
What happens if I accidentally pack something prohibited?
You'll have to surrender the item, return to check-in to put it in checked baggage, or mail it to yourself if the airport has that service. This can add 30-60 minutes to your process.
Do prescription medications need special handling?
Keep prescription meds in original bottles with your name. Liquid medications over 3.4 oz need separate screening. Bring a doctor's note for large quantities or controlled substances.
Is security different for connecting international flights?
If you're staying in the secure area, you usually don't go through security again. But if you collect checked bags or leave the secure zone, you'll need to go through security again for your connecting flight.
