How to handle a Dubai airport transit visa

Most transit passengers can obtain a 48-hour transit visa for free or a 96-hour visa for approximately 50 AED ($14) directly through the airline you are flying with. You must apply for this via the airline's website or check-in portal before you arrive at DXB.

  1. Check your airline eligibility. Only passengers flying with Emirates or flydubai can easily sponsor their own transit visas. If you are flying another carrier, you must book your visa through a travel agency or the Marhaba service at least 48 hours before departure.
  2. Book your connecting flight. Ensure your transit time at Dubai International Airport (DXB) is at least 8 hours but not more than 48 hours for the free visa, or up to 96 hours for the paid visa.
  3. Apply via the airline portal. Log into your 'Manage Your Booking' section on the Emirates or flydubai website. Look for the 'Transit Visa' option and upload a scan of your passport (valid for 6 months) and a color passport-sized photograph.
  4. Print your approval. Once approved, you will receive an e-visa via email. Print this document and carry it with you. You will need to present it at the immigration counter when you land in Dubai.
Can I apply for a transit visa once I land in Dubai?
No. You must have your transit visa approved before you board your flight to Dubai.
Do I need a transit visa if I am staying inside the terminal?
No. If you stay in the transit area and do not clear immigration, you do not need a visa.
Can I extend my 96-hour transit visa?
No. Transit visas are non-extendable. You must depart within the allotted time frame.
