Making the Most of a Dubai Layover

You need at least 8 hours to leave the airport comfortably. Use the Dubai Metro for fast, cheap transport to the main sights, focusing on the Downtown area to minimize travel time.

  1. Check your visa status. Verify if your nationality qualifies for a free visa-on-arrival. If you have a layover between 8 and 48 hours, you may be eligible for a transit visa.
  2. Store your luggage. Don't haul bags around. Use the luggage storage facility in Terminal 1 or 3. It costs about 30-40 AED per bag for 12 hours.
  3. Get a Nol Card. Buy a 'Silver' Nol card at the Metro station inside the airport. Load it with 20-30 AED for your trips to and from the city center.
  4. Head to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall. Take the Red Line Metro towards EXPO 2020. Get off at the 'Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall' station. The walk to the mall is air-conditioned and takes about 10 minutes.
Is the Metro the fastest way to get around?
Yes, it avoids the notorious Dubai traffic jams which can turn a 20-minute drive into a 60-minute ordeal.
Can I see the desert during a 10-hour layover?
No. It takes too long to get out of the city and back safely. Stick to the city center to ensure you don't miss your flight.
