Choosing the Best Neighborhood in Chiang Mai for Digital Nomads
Choose Nimman if you want high-speed internet, coffee shops, and proximity to co-working spaces. Choose the Old City if you prefer walkability and cultural immersion, or Santitham if you are looking for a local feel on a tighter budget.
- Assess your work requirements. If you need 500Mbps fiber-optic internet for constant video calls, prioritize Nimman. If you have a flexible setup and prefer quiet, the Old City or outer districts like Hang Dong work well.
- Define your transit style. If you don't ride a scooter, stick to the inner moat or Nimman. If you are comfortable riding, you can live further out in areas like Mae Hia to save 30% on rent.
- Book a short-term stay first. Don't sign a 6-month lease online. Book a hotel or Airbnb for 4 nights to walk the streets. Check for construction noise, nearby nightlife, and signal strength before committing to a monthly rental.
- Visit the co-working hubs. Spend one day at Punspace (Nimman or Tha Phae Gate) or Yellow Coworking to meet the community. Your choice of 'base' neighborhood is often dictated by which hub you frequent most.
- Is Nimman too touristy?
- It is definitely the most 'Westernized' part of the city. If you want a more authentic local experience, go to Santitham or Jed Yod.
- Do I need a motorbike?
- You can live without one if you stay in the Old City or Nimman and use the Grab app for transport, but having a scooter gives you significantly more freedom to explore the mountains.
