Crossing the Cambodia-Vietnam Border at Moc Bai
Take an international bus directly from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City; it handles the paperwork for you and takes about 6-7 hours total. You must have an e-visa pre-approved for Vietnam before boarding, as visas on arrival are generally not available at this land crossing.
- Get your Vietnam E-Visa. Apply for your Vietnam e-visa at least 7 days before your crossing. Print two physical copies of the PDF; the border agents will take one and you need the other for your records.
- Book a through-bus. Book a seat with a reputable bus company like Giant Ibis or Kumho Samco in Phnom Penh. Do not book 'bus-to-border' services that require you to change vehicles.
- Exit Cambodia. The bus will stop at the Cambodian side (Bavet). Gather your bags, walk through immigration to get your exit stamp, and return to the bus.
- Enter Vietnam. Drive a few hundred meters to the Moc Bai checkpoint. Take all luggage off the bus for X-ray scanning, present your passport and printed e-visa to the officers, and get your entry stamp.
- Can I get a visa at the border?
- No. You must arrive with a pre-approved printed Vietnam e-visa.
- Will border guards ask for money?
- Yes, they often ask for a 'stamp fee' or 'processing fee' of 1-5 USD. This is a bribe. Firmly, but politely, refuse to pay it, and wait for them to process your passport.
- Is it safer to fly?
- Flying is faster, but the bus is a standard, safe, and very budget-friendly way to cross this specific border.
