Cómo moverse en transporte público por Buenos Aires
To get around Buenos Aires, purchase a SUBE card at any 'kiosco' and register it online to manage your balance. Use the bus (colectivo) for short trips and the subway (Subte) to bypass peak-hour traffic.
- Get a SUBE card. Buy a physical SUBE card at a local kiosk or subway station. They cost roughly 880 ARS. You must register the card at the official SUBE website using your passport number to access discounted fares and check your balance online.
- Master the 'Colectivo' (Bus). Buses run 24/7. When you board, tell the driver your destination (or price) so they can set the machine. Tap your card on the reader located near the door. Note: Buses do not stop unless you wave your hand at the driver.
- Use the 'Subte' (Subway). The subway is the fastest way to cross the city center. It runs from approximately 5:30 AM to 11:30 PM. Use the 'Mapa Subte' app to see real-time status and route connections.
- Track your route. Use Google Maps or the 'Moovit' app. They are highly accurate for bus arrivals and subway connections in Buenos Aires. Avoid asking drivers for change; they only accept the card.
- Can I pay with cash on the bus?
- No. Drivers do not handle cash. You must have a loaded SUBE card to board.
- Is it safe to use the Subte at night?
- Stick to the main lines and stay in well-lit stations. As with any major city, keep your bag in front of you and be aware of your surroundings.
- Does one SUBE card work for two people?
- No. Each traveler needs their own card. You cannot tap the same card twice for two different passengers.
