How to Use Bangkok's BTS and MRT Public Transport
Bangkok's BTS Skytrain and MRT subway are fast, air-conditioned, and cover most tourist areas. Buy single-journey tickets at machines or get a Rabbit Card for convenience. BTS runs 6am-midnight, MRT 6am-midnight. You'll need to transfer between systems as they're separate networks.
- Download the transit app. Get the official BTS SkyTrain app or Citymapper. Both show real-time arrivals and route planning. The BTS app includes system maps you can use offline.
- Choose your payment method. For short stays: buy single-journey tickets at machines (35-65 baht per ride). For longer stays: get a Rabbit Card at any BTS station (100 baht deposit + top-up amount). Rabbit Cards work on BTS only, not MRT.
- Navigate the ticket machines. Select English language first. Choose your destination from the map or search. Insert exact change or bills (machines give change). Keep your ticket - you need it to exit.
- Board efficiently. Stand aside for passengers to exit first. During rush hours (7-9am, 5-7pm), expect crowded trains. Priority seats are clearly marked for elderly, pregnant, and disabled passengers.
- Transfer between systems. BTS and MRT are separate networks requiring separate tickets. Major transfer points: Asok/Sukhumvit (BTS Asok ↔ MRT Sukhumvit), Sala Daeng (BTS ↔ MRT Silom), Chatuchak Park (BTS Mo Chit ↔ MRT Chatuchak Park). Walk 5-10 minutes between stations.
- Exit properly. Insert your ticket at the exit gate to leave. Single-journey tickets are consumed. Rabbit Cards are returned after deducting fare. If your card doesn't work, find the station attendant.
- Can I use the same card for both BTS and MRT?
- No. Rabbit Cards only work on BTS. MRT has its own stored-value cards. You need separate payment methods or buy single-journey tickets for each system.
- What if I lose my ticket before exiting?
- Find a station attendant immediately. You'll need to pay the maximum fare (around 42-59 baht) to exit. Don't try to jump gates - there are cameras and security.
- Do trains run late at night?
- Both BTS and MRT stop around midnight (last trains 11:45pm-12:00am depending on direction). After midnight, use taxis, Grab, or buses. First trains start around 6:00am.
- Are the systems wheelchair accessible?
- Most newer stations have elevators and wheelchair access, but not all. BTS has better accessibility than older MRT stations. Check station maps or ask staff for accessible routes.
- Can I bring large luggage on trains?
- Yes, but avoid rush hours when trains are packed. Large suitcases are allowed but you're responsible for managing them in crowds. Some stations have escalators, others only stairs.
