How to get around Bali safely with a family
Use a combination of private drivers for long distances, ride-hailing apps for short trips, and hotel shuttles when available. Avoid renting scooters with children and stick to reputable transport options with proper insurance and child safety features.
- Book a private driver for day trips. Hire a driver through your hotel or a reputable agency like Bali Golden Tour or GetYourGuide. Expect to pay 600,000-800,000 IDR ($40-55) for a full day with an English-speaking driver. Verify the car has working seatbelts and request child seats if needed.
- Download Grab for short-distance rides. Install the Grab app before arrival and link a credit card. Choose GrabCar (not GrabBike) for family transport. Cars are air-conditioned and safer than local taxis. Rides within Ubud or Seminyak typically cost 15,000-35,000 IDR ($1-2.50).
- Arrange airport transfers in advance. Book through your hotel or use Grab from the official pickup area at Ngurah Rai Airport. A private transfer to Ubud costs around 350,000 IDR ($24), to Seminyak around 150,000 IDR ($10). Avoid taxi touts outside the terminal.
- Plan transport timing around traffic. Allow 2-3 hours for Ubud to beach areas during peak times (7-9am, 4-7pm). Start day trips early (8am departure) to avoid afternoon traffic and heat. Many attractions close at 5pm, so plan accordingly.
- Keep emergency contacts handy. Save your hotel's number, your driver's WhatsApp, and Bali's tourist police (0361-754599). Download offline maps before leaving WiFi areas. Keep 200,000 IDR cash for emergencies as card payment isn't universal.
- Is it safe to rent a car in Bali with children?
- Only if you're an experienced driver comfortable with chaotic traffic, narrow roads, and aggressive scooters. Most families find private drivers much safer and less stressful. Self-driving adds significant risk with children.
- Can we use ride-sharing apps with car seats?
- Grab doesn't guarantee child seats. You can request one in the notes, but most drivers won't have them. Bring your own car seat or use it as a reason to book private drivers who can accommodate family needs.
- How do we get around if our kids get motion sick?
- Choose front seats when possible, bring ginger candy, and plan frequent stops. Private drivers are more accommodating for breaks than ride-shares. The winding roads to Ubud are particularly challenging for motion-sensitive kids.
- Is public transport an option for families?
- Public buses (bemo) are cramped, hot, and difficult with luggage or strollers. Tourist shuttle buses between major destinations are better but still cramped. Stick to private transport for comfort and safety with children.
