How to Visit the Galapagos Islands

To visit the Galapagos, you must fly from mainland Ecuador into either Baltra or San Cristobal airport. You choose between a multi-day liveaboard cruise or staying on land and taking day trips via speedboats to nearby islands.

  1. Book your flights to Ecuador. Fly into Quito (UIO) or Guayaquil (GYE). You must spend at least one night in one of these cities, as flights to the Galapagos depart early in the morning.
  2. Choose your exploration method. Decide between a cruise (all-inclusive, visits remote islands) or island hopping (stay on Santa Cruz, San Cristobal, or Isabela and take daily boat tours). Cruises are best for wildlife density; land-based is best for budget and flexibility.
  3. Pay the entry fees. You must pay a $20 transit control card at the mainland airport and a $200 entrance fee (increased as of 2024) at the Galapagos airport upon arrival. Keep these receipts.
  4. Follow strict park rules. Stay on marked trails, do not touch the animals, and keep a distance of at least 6 feet (2 meters) from all wildlife. You must be accompanied by a licensed naturalist guide for all park excursions.
Do I need a tour guide?
Yes, by law, you cannot enter the protected national park areas without a certified naturalist guide.
Should I bring cash?
Yes. While larger restaurants take cards, many shops and tour operators prefer cash. ATMs are often broken or empty.
