How to Plan a Trip to Turkey

Plan at least 14 days to cover the major route from Istanbul to Cappadocia and the Mediterranean coast. Focus your travel between April and June or September and October to avoid extreme heat and winter crowds.

  1. Secure your e-Visa. Most travelers need an e-Visa. Apply at least 48 hours before departure via the official government portal. Keep a digital and printed copy on hand for airline check-in.
  2. Map your route. Start in Istanbul for 4 days. Take a domestic flight to Cappadocia for 3 days, then head south to the Turquoise Coast (Antalya or Fethiye) for 4 days before flying back to Istanbul.
  3. Book internal travel early. Domestic flights via Turkish Airlines or Pegasus are cheap (usually $40–$70) and save you 10+ hours of bus time. Book these at least 3 weeks in advance.
  4. Arrange your arrival transfer. Don't rely on taxis at IST airport. Arrange a private transfer through your accommodation beforehand to avoid being overcharged by non-metered drivers.
Do I need to carry cash?
Yes. While cards work in cities, you need Turkish Lira (TL) for small shops, village markets, and public toilets.
Is it safe for solo female travelers?
Yes, it is generally safe. Use standard travel precautions, dress modestly in rural areas, and stick to well-lit, populated districts at night.
