How to Spend a Week in Barcelona
Seven days gives you time to cover Barcelona's essential neighborhoods, major sights, and local culture without rushing. Focus on 2-3 areas per day, book Sagrada Família and Park Güell in advance, and save one full day for a beach break or day trip.
- Days 1-2: Get oriented in the Gothic Quarter and El Born. Start with the old city. Walk Las Ramblas once (tourist trap but worth seeing), then spend real time in Barrio Gótico and El Born. Visit the Cathedral, Picasso Museum, and Santa María del Mar. End day 2 at Park de la Ciutadella.
- Days 3-4: Modernisme architecture in Eixample. Book Sagrada Família tickets online (€26-33) for a specific time slot. Spend half a day there, then walk Passeig de Gràcia to see Casa Batlló and Casa Milà. Day 4: Park Güell in morning (€10, book ahead), afternoon in Gràcia neighborhood for local bars and squares.
- Day 5: Montjuïc Hill. Take the funicular up. Visit Fundació Joan Miró, walk through Parc de Montjuïc, see the city views from Castell de Montjuïc. If it's Thursday-Sunday, catch the Magic Fountain show at 9pm (free).
- Day 6: Beach day or day trip. Either relax at Barceloneta Beach and the waterfront, or take a day trip. Girona is 1 hour by train (€15 round trip). Montserrat monastery is 1.5 hours (€25 round trip including cable car).
- Day 7: Local neighborhoods and final sights. Explore neighborhoods you missed. Poble Sec for tapas bars, Sarrià for village feel, or El Raval for alternative culture. Visit any museums you skipped. End with sunset drinks at a rooftop bar in El Born or Eixample.
- Do I need to speak Spanish?
- English works in tourist areas and many restaurants. Locals appreciate basic Spanish or Catalan greetings. Download Google Translate app for menus and directions.
- Is Barcelona safe?
- Very safe for violent crime. Pickpocketing is common on metro, Las Ramblas, and beaches. Keep valuables in front pockets or money belt. Avoid empty streets late at night in El Raval.
- Should I rent a car?
- No. Barcelona has excellent public transport and parking is expensive/difficult. Walk and use metro for city sights. Only rent car for day trips to Costa Brava or inland areas.
- When do restaurants open?
- Lunch 1-4pm, dinner 8:30-11:30pm. Many restaurants close 4-8:30pm. For earlier dinner, find tourist-oriented places or grab tapas at bars that serve food all day.
