Bruges in a Day: Making the Most of Your 24 Hours

Focus your day on the historic city center, prioritizing a canal boat tour and walking the perimeter of the Markt and Burg squares. Arrive by train before 9:00 AM to avoid the worst of the day-tripper crowds and see the sights before the bus tours arrive.

  1. Arrive by Train. Take the train to Bruges (Brugge) station. It is a 15-minute flat walk or a 5-minute bus ride to the Markt. Don't drive; parking in the center is difficult and expensive.
  2. Get on the Water Early. Head straight to a canal boat pier near the Vismarkt. Boats depart every 15-20 minutes. Taking this tour first provides context for the city's architecture and layout before you walk it.
  3. Navigate the Squares. Spend your morning walking between the Markt and the Burg. The Markt houses the Belfry; the Burg houses the Basilica of the Holy Blood. These are within 300 meters of each other.
  4. Explore the Minnewater Park. In the afternoon, walk south to the Minnewater (Lake of Love) and the Beguinage (Begijnhof). It is quieter and a perfect escape from the crowded city center.
Is one day enough to see Bruges?
Yes. Because the historic center is compact, you can see all major landmarks on foot in 6 to 8 hours.
Should I climb the Belfry?
If you are fit, yes. It is 366 steps, and the views are the best in the city. If there is a 2-hour wait, skip it and opt for a view from a canal-side cafe instead.
