How to Visit the Amalfi Coast Without a Car

Use the SITA Sud bus system and ferries to navigate the Amalfi Coast car-free. Base yourself in one town and take day trips, or move between towns every 2-3 days using public transport that runs April through October.

  1. Get to your base town. Fly into Naples, take the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento (70 minutes, €3.60), then catch SITA Sud bus 5070 to your chosen base. Positano takes 50 minutes, Amalfi takes 75 minutes from Sorrento.
  2. Master the SITA Sud bus system. Buy tickets at tabacchi shops or online (€2 per ride, €8 for day pass). Buses run every 30-60 minutes April-October. Download the SITA Sud app for real-time schedules. Board early in routes - buses fill up fast in summer.
  3. Use ferries between coastal towns. Take Travelmar or Alilauro ferries April-October between Positano, Amalfi, Salerno, and Capri. Cost €8-15 per trip. Much faster than buses and great views. Book morning ferries in advance during peak season.
  4. Choose your base strategically. Amalfi has best transport connections and is central. Positano is prettiest but pricier. Salerno is cheapest with train connections. Avoid basing in Ravello - it's 25 minutes uphill by bus from Amalfi.
  5. Plan day trips efficiently. Visit Ravello and Amalfi in one day. Take morning ferry to Capri, return by 4pm. Do the Path of Gods hike from Bomerano (bus from Amalfi) to Nocelle, then bus down to Positano.
  6. Book accommodations near transport. Stay within 200 meters of bus stops or ferry ports. In Positano, book near the main square or beach level - the hilltop hotels require steep walks with luggage.
How reliable are the buses in summer?
Delays are common July-August due to traffic and crowds. Add 30 minutes buffer time for connections. First morning buses (7-8am) and evening buses after 6pm are most reliable.
Can I do this trip in winter?
Many ferries stop running November-March, and bus schedules are reduced. Some hotels close. It's possible but you'll rely mainly on buses and have fewer dining options.
Is luggage a problem on public transport?
Keep luggage minimal. One wheeled suitcase maximum - buses have limited storage and ferry gangways are narrow. Many accommodations offer luggage transfer services for €15-25.
How do I get to Capri without a car?
Take ferry from Amalfi, Positano, or Sorrento. From Amalfi it's 45 minutes and costs €15. Book return tickets in advance during summer - last ferries leave Capri around 6:30pm.
