Planning Your Trip to Tanzania and Zanzibar

To do both, spend 7 days on a safari circuit in Northern Tanzania and 5 days relaxing on Zanzibar beaches. You will need to fly into Kilimanjaro (JRO) for the safari and take a domestic flight or ferry to reach Zanzibar.

  1. Choose your safari circuit. Stick to the Northern Circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire) for first-timers. It is the most accessible and offers the best concentration of wildlife. Avoid trying to squeeze in the Southern parks if you only have two weeks.
  2. Book your safari operator. Book a private or small-group safari at least 4 months in advance. Ensure they are licensed by TATO (Tanzania Association of Tour Operators). A reputable operator handles all park permits, vehicle logistics, and lodging.
  3. Plan the internal connection. Do not take the bus from Arusha to Dar es Salaam to catch a ferry; it is a 12-hour+ ordeal. Book a regional flight from Arusha (ARK) or Kilimanjaro (JRO) directly to Zanzibar (ZNZ) to save two full days of travel.
  4. Sort your Zanzibar logistics. Stay in Nungwi or Kendwa for swimmable beaches regardless of tides. Stay in Stone Town for 1 night only to see the historic sites, then head to the coast.
Do I need anti-malarial medication?
Yes, Tanzania is a high-risk area. Consult a travel clinic at least 6 weeks before your trip to get a prescription for Malarone or Doxycycline.
Is tipping expected?
Yes. On safari, it is standard to tip your driver/guide 20-30 USD per day. In restaurants, 10% is generous but not strictly required.
