Booking affordable flights to Thailand during the low season
Fly between May and October to hit the low season, and book your tickets exactly 8 to 12 weeks before departure. Use Google Flights to track prices and set alerts so you can jump on a fare drop immediately.
- Target the shoulder months. Avoid November through February. Aim for May, June, or September. These months fall during the monsoon season, meaning flight inventory is high and demand is low, often saving you 30% compared to peak winter rates.
- Use the 'Explore' tool. Open Google Flights and leave the destination as 'Thailand' rather than 'Bangkok.' Compare fares to Phuket (HKT) and Chiang Mai (CNX). Sometimes flying into a secondary hub and taking a cheap local carrier is cheaper than a direct flight to BKK.
- Leverage mid-week departures. Set your departure date for a Tuesday or Wednesday. Friday and Sunday flights are consistently 15-20% more expensive because of weekend traveler volume.
- Book separate legs if necessary. If long-haul flights are expensive, look for a budget carrier flight to a major Asian hub like Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, then book a separate, short flight to Thailand using a local airline like AirAsia.
- Is the weather really that bad in low season?
- It is rarely a constant wash-out. Expect short, intense bursts of rain in the afternoon followed by sunshine. It is humid, but the reduced crowds at temples and beaches are worth the tradeoff.
- Should I book through a third-party site to save money?
- No. Always book directly through the airline's website. If there is a delay or cancellation during the low season (when airline schedules are often adjusted), dealing directly with the carrier is the only way to get rebooked efficiently.
