How to secure free or low-cost stopovers in the Middle East
To get a free or heavily discounted stopover, you must book a multi-city ticket directly through the airline's official website using their dedicated stopover portal. Do not use third-party search engines like Expedia or Kayak, as they often fail to trigger the subsidized hotel and visa offers.
- Check the carrier's stopover portal. Identify the primary carriers (Qatar Airways, Emirates, Etihad, or Saudia). Visit their specific 'Stopover' page—not the general booking engine—to see current partnership deals with local hotels.
- Use the 'Multi-city' search tool. Instead of selecting 'Round Trip', choose 'Multi-city'. Input your departure point to the hub, the hub to your final destination, and the final destination back to your origin. Ensure the layover in the hub city is at least 12 hours and usually no more than 4 nights.
- Select your promotional hotel. After selecting your flights, the portal will prompt you to add a hotel. The discount (or free stay) will only be applied at this stage. If the price doesn't drop to $0–$20, you have selected a flight class that does not qualify for the promotion.
- Confirm visa requirements. Many stopover programs include a transit visa or a discounted tourist visa. Check your 'Manage Booking' tab immediately after payment to ensure your visa application link has been activated.
- Can I get a free hotel if I book through an online travel agent?
- Rarely. These stopover deals are marketing incentives funded by the airlines and local tourism boards; they require a direct booking to verify the ticket class.
- Is there a minimum flight duration for these deals?
- Yes, most carriers require your layover to be at least 12 hours, but no more than 96 hours (4 days) to qualify for the special hotel rates.
- What if my flight gets delayed?
- Since you booked the flight and hotel as a package through the airline, they are responsible for rebooking both if a delay affects your connection.
