So pack light: How to fly internationally without checked bags
Avoid checked baggage fees by sticking to a single carry-on bag that meets airline size restrictions and utilizing a 'personal item' for your essential electronics and documents. Wear your heaviest clothing on the plane to maximize the space inside your carry-on.
- Check your airline's specific dimensions. Most international airlines allow a carry-on size of 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm). Verify your specific carrier's limit on their website before buying a bag, as budget airlines may have stricter limits.
- Use a soft-sided bag. Choose a soft-sided carry-on or a backpack. They are easier to squish into tight overhead bins or under-seat spaces if the gate agent forces you to gate-check due to space.
- Master the 'wear-it' strategy. Wear your heaviest shoes, thickest coat, and bulkiest sweater onto the plane. This saves 3–5 pounds of weight and significant volume inside your bag.
- Consolidate liquids and tech. Keep your 100ml liquids bag and your electronics at the very top of your carry-on or in your personal item. You will need to pull these out quickly at international security checkpoints.
- Optimize your personal item. Your personal item (laptop bag or small backpack) must fit under the seat in front of you. Use it for heavy items like chargers, cameras, and batteries so they don't count toward your main carry-on weight limit.
- What if my carry-on is too heavy for the airline?
- International carriers are stricter than domestic ones. If you are close to the limit, wear your heaviest items and move any heavy electronics to your personal item until your carry-on meets the weight requirement.
- Do I really need a personal item?
- Yes. It acts as your overflow space. Use it for items you need during the flight so you aren't digging through your overhead-bin bag.
