How to Book Gorilla Trekking Permits in Uganda

Book Uganda gorilla permits directly through Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) online or through a licensed tour operator. Permits cost $800 per person and should be booked 3-6 months in advance, especially for peak season (June-September, December-January).

  1. Choose your national park. Decide between Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (4 sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, Nkuringo) or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi has more gorilla families and higher success rates. Mgahinga is smaller with one habituated group but easier logistics.
  2. Book through UWA or tour operator. Visit ugandawildlife.org to book directly, or use a licensed operator. Direct booking requires full payment upfront via bank transfer. Tour operators often accept credit cards and can bundle with accommodation but charge 10-15% more.
  3. Provide required information. Submit full names exactly as on passport, passport numbers, nationality, preferred trekking dates (give 2-3 options), and physical fitness level. Names must match passport exactly - changes cost $40 admin fee.
  4. Pay and confirm. UWA requires bank transfer to Stanbic Bank Uganda in USD. Tour operators accept cards. You'll receive a permit confirmation with park details, reporting time (usually 7:30 AM), and what to bring.
  5. Print and carry permit. Print your permit confirmation. Bring original passport, yellow fever certificate, and permit to the park briefing. Digital copies accepted as backup but rangers prefer physical documents.
How far in advance should I book?
3-6 months minimum. Peak season (June-September, December-January) permits sell out 6+ months ahead. April-May rainy season has better availability but muddy conditions.
Can I change my permit date?
Yes, with 8+ weeks notice and $40 admin fee, subject to availability. Name changes require passport verification and same fee. No refunds for cancellations within 8 weeks.
What if I don't see gorillas?
Success rate is 95%+ in Bwindi, 85% in Mgahinga. If your group doesn't find gorillas (rare), UWA offers another trek at 50% cost the next day, subject to permit availability.
Do I need travel insurance for trekking?
Highly recommended. Most policies exclude gorilla trekking unless specifically covered. Look for adventure travel insurance that covers hiking and wildlife activities in Uganda.
