Booking Hostels for Island Hopping in Thailand
Book your first two nights in each island hub online using Hostelworld or Agoda, but leave the rest of your trip flexible. Most islands have plenty of availability for walk-ins or same-day bookings via apps during the shoulder season.
- Select your booking platforms. Download Hostelworld for the social vibe/reviews and Agoda for better pricing on private rooms or guesthouses. Use Hostelworld to check the 'atmosphere' score if you are a solo traveler.
- Check the ferry schedule first. Book your hostel only after you have confirmed the ferry arrival time. If you arrive on the last boat at 6:00 PM, ensure your hostel has a 24-hour reception or a late check-in policy.
- Prioritize location over price. Don't save $5 a night by staying in the center of an island if you want to be near the beach. Look for hostels within walking distance of the main pier or the primary beach strip to save on expensive island taxi (songthaew) fees.
- Use filters to avoid 'party' hostels. If you need sleep, filter by 'quiet' or check reviews specifically mentioning noise levels. Avoid hostels located directly on 'Walking Streets' unless you plan to stay out until 3:00 AM.
- Should I book everything before I leave home?
- No. Travel plans in Thailand change constantly due to weather or meeting new people. Book the first two nights, then book the rest while you are on the ground.
- Are hostel lockers actually secure?
- Most are, but bring your own high-quality padlock. Never leave your passport or large amounts of cash in an unlocked locker; keep your valuables in a small daypack you can carry with you.
- Do I need to print my bookings?
- No, digital confirmation on your phone is sufficient for 99% of hostels in Thailand.
