Booking a Desert Camp in Wadi Rum

Book your camp at least 3 weeks in advance through a reputable operator or a platform like Booking.com to ensure you get a desert-based camp rather than one on the village perimeter. Always confirm that your package includes a 4x4 jeep tour, as this is the only way to reach the remote sites.

  1. Choose your camp style. Decide between 'traditional' goat-hair tents, which offer an authentic Bedouin experience, or 'Martian' domes, which feature glass walls for stargazing. Domes are significantly more expensive and usually require booking months in advance.
  2. Check the location. Verify on a map that the camp is located within the protected Wadi Rum area, not in Rum Village. Camps in the village are accessible by car, while true desert camps require a transfer by the host’s 4x4.
  3. Confirm transport logistics. Email the camp immediately after booking to coordinate your arrival. Ask for the exact meeting point at the Wadi Rum Visitor Center. Do not expect to drive your own rental car to the camp; you must leave it in the village parking lot.
  4. Verify included services. Ensure your booking includes dinner and breakfast, as there are no restaurants in the desert. Confirm if your tour is private or shared; a private 4x4 tour for a half-day typically costs an additional 60–80 JOD per vehicle.
Can I drive my rental car to the camp?
No. All private vehicles must be parked at the Wadi Rum Visitor Center or the village. Your host will pick you up from there in a 4x4.
Is there Wi-Fi at the camps?
Most remote desert camps have zero cell service and no Wi-Fi. Treat it as a digital detox.
Are the toilets shared?
In standard camps, yes. If you book a 'luxury' or 'premium' dome, you will typically have a private bathroom inside your unit.
