How to Get the East African Tourist Visa

The East African Tourist Visa costs $100 and allows entry to Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda for 90 days. Apply online through any of the three countries' visa portals, submit required documents, and receive approval within 3-5 business days.

  1. Choose your entry country. Decide which country you'll enter first (Kenya, Uganda, or Rwanda). You'll apply through that country's visa portal. The visa works for all three countries regardless of which portal you use.
  2. Gather required documents. You need: passport valid for 6+ months, passport photo, flight itinerary showing entry and exit from East Africa, hotel bookings or invitation letter, and yellow fever vaccination certificate.
  3. Complete the online application. Visit the visa portal for your entry country (evisa.go.ke for Kenya, visas.immigration.go.ug for Uganda, or irembo.gov.rw for Rwanda). Fill out the form completely and upload all documents as PDFs or JPEGs under 2MB each.
  4. Pay the visa fee. Pay $100 USD using a credit or debit card. The fee is the same regardless of which country's portal you use. You'll receive a payment confirmation email immediately.
  5. Wait for approval. Processing takes 3-5 business days. You'll receive an email with your visa approval letter. Print this letter and carry it with you when traveling.
  6. Enter East Africa. Present your printed visa approval letter, passport, and yellow fever certificate at immigration. The visa allows multiple entries between the three countries for 90 days from your first entry date.
Can I apply for this visa on arrival?
No, the East African Tourist Visa must be obtained online before travel. Regular single-country visas are available on arrival, but not the regional East African visa.
What if I only want to visit one or two of the three countries?
You can still use the East African Tourist Visa, but it costs the same $100 whether you visit one country or all three. Single-country visas are cheaper ($50-60) if you're only visiting one country.
Can I enter through any border crossing?
Yes, the visa is valid for entry through any official border crossing between the three countries, including land borders and all international airports.
What happens if my visa application is rejected?
Rejections are rare if you submit complete documents. Common reasons include incomplete applications or invalid yellow fever certificates. You can reapply immediately after fixing the issues.
