How to Get a Japan Work Visa

Apply for a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) through your Japanese employer first, then submit your visa application at a Japanese consulate with the COE, passport, application form, and photo. The entire process takes 2-4 months from start to finish.

  1. Find a Japanese employer willing to sponsor you. You cannot apply for a work visa without a job offer from a Japanese company. The employer must be willing to handle the Certificate of Eligibility application on your behalf. Most teaching positions (ALT, eikaiwa), tech jobs, and international companies regularly sponsor foreign workers.
  2. Have your employer apply for your Certificate of Eligibility. Your Japanese employer submits the COE application to Japanese immigration on your behalf. They'll need your university diploma, transcripts, resume, and passport copy. This step takes 1-3 months and costs nothing for you.
  3. Receive your COE from your employer. Once approved, immigration sends the COE to your employer, who then mails it to you. The COE is valid for 3 months from issue date, so apply for your visa immediately upon receiving it.
  4. Apply for your work visa at a Japanese consulate. Submit your application at the Japanese consulate nearest you with: original COE, passport, completed visa application form, recent passport photo, and consulate fee ($27-60 depending on nationality). Processing takes 3-7 business days.
  5. Enter Japan within 90 days. Your work visa becomes your entry permit. You must enter Japan within 90 days of visa issuance. Bring your COE original when you travel—immigration will want to see it at arrival.
  6. Complete residence procedures within 14 days of arrival. Visit your local ward office to register your address and apply for a residence card at the airport or regional immigration office. Your employer should help coordinate this process.
Can I apply for a Japan work visa without a job offer?
No. You must have a confirmed job offer from a Japanese employer who will sponsor your Certificate of Eligibility application. Tourist visas cannot be converted to work visas from within Japan.
How long does the Certificate of Eligibility take?
COE processing takes 1-3 months on average, but can extend to 4 months during busy periods (March-April). Your employer handles this application, not you.
Do I need to speak Japanese to get a work visa?
No Japanese language requirement exists for most work visa categories. However, many employers will require Japanese ability depending on the role. English teaching positions specifically recruit native English speakers.
Can I bring my family on a work visa?
Yes, if your visa is valid for 1 year or longer, you can apply for dependent visas for your spouse and unmarried children under 20. They can apply after you receive your work visa.
What if my COE application gets rejected?
Your employer can reapply with additional documentation addressing the rejection reasons. Common issues include insufficient qualifications documentation or unclear job duties. The process restarts from the beginning.
