How to Get Visas for India as a Couple
Couples traveling to India need separate visa applications but can coordinate timing and documents. Apply online through the official Indian visa portal 2-4 weeks before travel, gather identical supporting documents, and consider applying together to ensure simultaneous processing.
- Determine Your Visa Type. Most couples need e-Tourist visas (valid 30-365 days depending on nationality) or regular tourist visas. Check if you qualify for e-visa based on your passport - 171 countries are eligible. Business or long-term visas require different processes.
- Gather Documents for Both Partners. Each person needs: passport valid 6+ months, recent passport photo (2x2 inches, white background), proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter), return flight itinerary, and bank statements from last 3 months. If married, bring marriage certificate as supporting document.
- Apply Online Simultaneously. Go to indianvisaonline.gov.in (the only official site). Fill separate applications but use the same travel dates and accommodation details. Pay separately - e-visa costs $25-80 USD depending on nationality and duration. Regular visa through consulate costs $160-200 USD.
- Submit Biometrics if Required. E-visa applicants skip this step. Regular visa applicants must visit the nearest Indian consulate or visa application center within 30 days of online submission. Both partners can schedule appointments on the same day.
- Track and Receive Visas. E-visas arrive via email in 2-4 business days. Print copies for both travelers. Regular visas take 5-10 business days and are stamped in passports. Check that all details match your passport exactly before traveling.
- Can we submit one visa application for both of us?
- No. India requires individual applications for each traveler, even married couples. You must submit separate forms and pay separate fees.
- Should we apply for the same visa type?
- Yes, apply for the same visa type and duration to avoid complications at immigration. Use identical travel dates and accommodation details.
- What if our visa applications are approved at different times?
- This rarely happens if you apply simultaneously, but you can still travel together. The later-approved visa holder should carry proof of the relationship and explanation for the delay.
- Do we need to prove our relationship?
- Not required for tourist visas, but carrying a marriage certificate or other relationship proof can help if questioned by officials about traveling together.
- Can one partner apply for both visas?
- No. Each person must complete their own application with their own email address and payment method. Biometric appointments (for regular visas) must also be individual.
