How to get a Schengen visa for family travel
Apply at the consulate of your main destination country 3-6 months before travel. Each family member needs their own application, but you can submit together. Expect 15-30 days processing time and costs around €80 per adult, €40 per child.
- Determine which consulate to apply to. Apply at the consulate of the country where you'll spend the most nights. If equal time in multiple countries, choose your first entry point. This is your 'main destination' rule.
- Gather documents for each family member. Each person needs: completed application form, passport photos, passport valid 3+ months beyond trip, travel insurance (€30,000 minimum coverage), flight reservations, accommodation bookings, financial proof, and employment/school letters. Children under 18 need birth certificates and parental consent if traveling with one parent.
- Book your visa appointment. Schedule online or by phone 3-6 months ahead. Most consulates allow family appointments on the same day. Bring originals and copies of all documents. Some locations require biometric data for first-time applicants over 12.
- Submit applications and pay fees. Pay €80 per adult, €40 for children 6-12, free for under 6. Some nationalities get reduced fees. Payment methods vary by consulate - check beforehand. Keep all receipts.
- Track your application. Processing takes 15-30 days, up to 60 during peak season. You'll get a reference number to check status online. Don't book non-refundable travel until you have your visa in hand.
- Can we apply if our itinerary isn't finalized?
- Yes, use hotel reservations that can be cancelled and flight reservations (not purchased tickets). Many booking sites offer free cancellation options specifically for visa applications.
- What if we're visiting family in Europe?
- You'll need an invitation letter from your family member including their ID copy, proof of residence, and a statement of financial responsibility. This can strengthen your application but doesn't guarantee approval.
- Do children need separate appointments?
- Children can usually accompany parents to the same appointment, but each needs their own complete application form and document set. Children over 12 typically need to provide biometric data.
- Can we extend our stay once in Europe?
- Tourist visas cannot be extended except in extraordinary circumstances. You must leave the Schengen area before your visa expires and observe the 90/180 rule for future visits.
