How to Get European Visas for Family Travel
Most families need a Schengen visa for Europe, which allows 90 days in 26 countries. Apply at the consulate of your main destination 3 months before travel. Each family member needs their own application, but you can submit together.
- Determine which visa you need. If visiting multiple European countries, you need a Schengen visa from the country where you'll spend the most time. For UK-only trips, get a UK visitor visa. For non-Schengen countries like Croatia or Romania, check individual requirements.
- Gather documents for each family member. Each person needs: valid passport (6+ months remaining), completed application form, recent passport photo, travel insurance (minimum €30,000 coverage), flight reservations, hotel bookings, bank statements (3 months), and employment letter. Children need birth certificates and parental consent letters if traveling with one parent.
- Book your visa appointment. Schedule at the consulate or visa center of your main destination country. Book 6-8 weeks before travel. Family members can often be seen together in one appointment slot.
- Attend the appointment together. Arrive 15 minutes early with all original documents plus copies. Each family member must be present for biometric data collection (fingerprints and photo). Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprints.
- Track your application. Processing takes 15-20 calendar days. You'll receive a tracking number. Pick up passports together or arrange courier delivery for the whole family.
- Can we apply for visas if we don't have final travel plans?
- You need proof of accommodation and flight reservations, but these can be refundable bookings. Many applicants book refundable hotels and flights, get the visa, then make final arrangements.
- Do children need their own visa applications?
- Yes, every family member including infants needs a separate application and visa. Children under 12 don't provide fingerprints but still need photos and documents.
- What if our family has different passport nationalities?
- Each family member applies based on their own passport. Some may need visas while others don't. Check requirements for each nationality individually.
- Can we extend our Schengen visa while in Europe?
- Schengen tourist visas cannot be extended except in exceptional circumstances. Plan your 90-day stay carefully as overstaying has serious consequences.
