How to Get Visas for Backpacking Europe
Most backpackers don't need visas for Europe if you're from the US, Canada, Australia, or UK. You get 90 days visa-free in the Schengen Area, plus separate time in non-Schengen countries like the UK and Ireland. Plan your route to maximize this time and carry proof of onward travel.
- Check if you need a visa at all. US, Canadian, Australian, UK, and most developed country passport holders get 90 days visa-free in the Schengen Area. Check your passport's visa-free agreements online. If you're from elsewhere, you'll likely need Schengen visas before you go.
- Understand the 90/180 rule. You can spend 90 days in any 180-day period in Schengen countries. This includes most of Europe but NOT the UK, Ireland, Romania, Bulgaria, or Cyprus. Time in non-Schengen countries doesn't count toward your 90 days.
- Plan your route strategically. Start with non-Schengen countries (UK, Ireland) or save them for the end. This gives you extra time beyond your 90 Schengen days. Romania and Bulgaria also don't count toward Schengen limits.
- Get required documents ready. Carry proof of onward travel (return ticket or ticket out of Europe), accommodation bookings for your first few nights, and bank statements showing €50-100 per day of travel funds. Border guards rarely check but legally can.
- Track your days carefully. Download a Schengen calculator app or use a spreadsheet. Your 90 days reset after you've been outside Schengen for 90 consecutive days. Overstaying can result in bans from returning.
- What happens if I overstay my 90 days?
- You can face fines, deportation, and bans from returning to Schengen countries for 1-5 years. Even a few days overstay can trigger this. Leave before day 90.
- Can I reset my 90 days by going to the UK?
- No. Only leaving the entire Schengen Area resets your counter. The UK counts as outside Schengen, but you need to stay out of Schengen for 90 days to get a fresh 90-day period.
- Do I need travel insurance for Europe?
- Technically yes for Schengen entry - €30,000 minimum coverage. In practice, border guards rarely check tourists, but you should have it anyway for medical emergencies.
- What if my country needs Schengen visas?
- Apply at the consulate of your main destination country 3-6 months early. You'll need €80-120, accommodation bookings, flight reservations, bank statements, and travel insurance before applying.
