How to Handle Visas and Documents When Traveling Europe as a Couple

Different passport holders face different visa requirements for Europe. One partner may need a tourist visa while the other travels visa-free, or you might need different documents entirely. Check each country's requirements for both nationalities, apply separately if needed, and carry proof of your relationship.

  1. Check visa requirements for both passports. Look up Schengen visa requirements for each partner's nationality on the official EU immigration portal. US and Canadian citizens get 90 days visa-free, but many other nationalities need tourist visas. Requirements can be completely different.
  2. Determine if you need separate applications. Even married couples usually apply for visas separately unless specifically traveling on a family visa category. Each person submits their own application, documents, and fees. Book appointments at the same consulate if possible.
  3. Gather relationship documentation. Bring marriage certificate, civil union documents, or proof of long-term partnership. Some countries want evidence you're traveling together, especially if one partner has visa restrictions and the other doesn't.
  4. Coordinate application timing. Submit visa applications within the same week if both partners need them. Processing times vary by nationality - one might get approved in 5 days while the other takes 3 weeks. Plan accordingly.
  5. Prepare for different entry procedures. At European borders, visa-free travelers use automated gates while visa holders go through manual passport control. You might be separated temporarily - this is normal. Meet at baggage claim or arrivals area.
  6. Pack documents separately and together. Each person carries their own passport and visa documents. Also pack one copy of marriage certificate or partnership proof that either partner can show if questioned about traveling together.
What if only one of us needs a visa?
Very common situation. The visa-free partner can travel normally while the other applies for a tourist visa. Include proof of relationship in the visa application to show you're traveling together legitimately.
Can we apply for visas together as a married couple?
Usually no. Most European countries require individual applications even for spouses. You can book appointments on the same day and mention you're traveling together, but expect to submit separate paperwork and fees.
Do we need travel insurance for both partners?
If either partner needs a Schengen visa, they must have travel insurance covering 30,000 euros minimum. Get a policy that covers both travelers to ensure consistency and avoid complications at borders.
What happens if one visa gets denied?
The approved partner can still travel, but this creates obvious complications. Consider postponing the trip to reapply together, or the visa-free partner might travel alone if plans can't be changed.
Should we book flights before getting visas approved?
Book refundable tickets only, or wait until visas are approved. Visa applications require flight reservations, but don't pay for non-refundable tickets until you have approval in hand.
