How to plan a scuba diving certification trip

Complete your PADI or SSI open water certification by booking a 4-day intensive course at a PADI Five Star Dive Center. You must complete online e-learning modules before arrival to spend your vacation days in the water rather than a classroom.

  1. Choose your agency and complete theory. Select between PADI or SSI. Register for their online e-learning portal and finish all knowledge reviews and quizzes before you fly. This saves 1.5 days of your trip.
  2. Select a reputable dive shop. Search for a 'PADI Five Star Dive Resort' or 'SSI Instructor Training Center.' Read reviews specifically mentioning 'safety standards' and 'small group ratios' (no more than 4 students per instructor).
  3. Get a medical clearance. Download the standard Diver Medical Participant Questionnaire. If you answer 'yes' to any of the medical history questions, you must have a physician sign the form before you travel.
  4. Schedule the pool and open water sessions. Coordinate with the shop to split your trip: Day 1 and 2 for confined water (pool) skills and classroom review, Day 3 and 4 for four open water check-out dives.
Do I need to be a great swimmer?
You need to be comfortable in the water. You will be required to swim 200 meters (any stroke) and float/tread water for 10 minutes without assistance.
Should I buy my own gear?
Don't buy BCDs or regulators yet. Start with a high-quality mask and snorkel that fits your face perfectly; rental masks often leak and ruin the experience.
Can I fly immediately after diving?
No. You must wait at least 18 hours after your final dive before flying in an airplane to avoid decompression sickness.
