Planning Your First Scuba Diving Trip to the Great Barrier Reef
Fly into Cairns to access the best outer reef dive sites and plan your trip between August and November for the clearest water. Book a liveaboard boat for at least three days to reach the most pristine reefs beyond the reach of day-trippers.
- Choose your base. Base yourself in Cairns for the widest selection of dive operators and proximity to the outer reef. Use Port Douglas if you want a quieter, more upscale atmosphere, though options are slightly more limited.
- Select your boat type. Choose between a day trip (2-3 dives) or a liveaboard (3-5 days). Day trips are cheaper but often visit sites heavily impacted by tourism; liveaboards get you to the 'Ribbon Reefs' or Osprey Reef where the coral is healthiest.
- Verify your certification. Bring your physical or digital PADI/NAUI card. If you are not certified, book a 'Discovery Scuba' course, which includes a classroom session and a shallow reef dive under direct supervision.
- Check the conditions. Monitor the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) website for wind speeds. If wind exceeds 20 knots, expect choppy surface conditions and lower visibility on the outer reef.
- Can I dive if I've never done it before?
- Yes, most operators offer 'Introductory Dives' that require no prior experience, though you will be closely monitored by an instructor.
- Is it safe to dive if I am not a strong swimmer?
- You need to be comfortable in the water. While the instructors handle the gear and depth, you must be able to float and move with fins.
