How to Pack for a Beach Vacation
Focus on a capsule wardrobe of breathable, quick-dry fabrics and limit yourself to one pair of versatile sandals. Only pack the essentials that protect you from sun and sand, leaving behind heavy denim or excess bulky items.
- Select your fabrics. Stick to linen, thin cotton, or synthetic performance fabrics that dry fast. Avoid thick cotton or heavy polyester, which will trap sweat and take days to dry in humid coastal air.
- Use a dry bag for electronics. Don't just rely on a Ziploc. Invest in a 5L-10L roll-top dry bag to keep your phone, wallet, and camera protected from sand and accidental splashes while at the beach.
- Pack a 'Sand-Free' kit. Include a small soft-bristled brush (like a makeup brush) to dust sand off your feet before getting in the car or hotel, and a microfiber towel which shakes off sand much easier than traditional cotton loops.
- Group your liquids. Keep sunscreen, after-sun lotion, and bug spray in a separate, clear, leak-proof pouch. If one bottle leaks due to pressure changes, it won't ruin your clothes.
- Should I pack a heavy beach towel?
- No. They take up too much room and stay damp. Use a lightweight microfiber towel.
- How many swimsuits do I actually need?
- Two. Wear one while the other dries so you are never putting on a cold, damp suit.
