Applying for an Australian Working Holiday Visa

To get a Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417 or 462), you must be aged 18–30 (or 35 for some countries), hold a valid passport from an eligible nation, and apply online through the Australian Department of Home Affairs ImmiAccount portal. You need to prove you have at least $5,000 AUD in savings and meet health and character requirements.

  1. Check your eligibility. Go to the Department of Home Affairs 'Explore Visa Options' tool. Confirm whether you qualify for the 417 (Working Holiday) or 462 (Work and Holiday) visa based on your citizenship, as requirements and caps vary significantly between them.
  2. Gather your financial proof. Ensure you have a bank statement showing at least $5,000 AUD in liquid funds. Many applicants also include a recent credit card statement with a high limit to show additional stability.
  3. Create an ImmiAccount. Register an account on the official Australian government website. This is the only portal where you can submit your application and track its status.
  4. Submit your application and fee. Fill out the online form accurately. You will need to pay the application fee, which is currently $650 AUD. Keep the transaction receipt for your records.
  5. Complete health and biometrics. If requested by immigration, book your health examinations and biometric collection (fingerprints/photos) at an approved clinic or visa center. Do not do this unless you receive a specific request email.
Can I apply while already in Australia?
Generally, you must be outside Australia to apply for your first Working Holiday visa.
Do I need a job offer before I arrive?
No. The visa is designed for 'working holidaymakers' to find casual work after arrival. You are not required to have a job lined up.
How do I get a second year visa?
You must complete 88 days of 'specified work' (typically farming, mining, or construction) in regional Australia while on your first visa.
