How to Trek to Everest Base Camp

The Everest Base Camp trek takes 12-14 days round trip from Kathmandu, covering 130km with a maximum altitude of 5,364m. Fly to Lukla, trek through Sherpa villages with mandatory acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche, then reach base camp before returning the same route.

  1. Get your permits in Kathmandu. Visit the Nepal Tourism Board office to get your TIMS card (2,000 NPR) and Sagarmatha National Park entry permit (3,000 NPR). Bring passport photos and copies. Takes 1-2 hours total.
  2. Fly Kathmandu to Lukla. Book the 35-minute flight to Tenzing-Hillary Airport (Lukla). Flights cost $180-220 and are weather dependent. Morning departures are more reliable. Weight limit is 15kg for luggage plus 5kg carry-on.
  3. Trek Lukla to Namche Bazaar (Day 1-2). Day 1: Trek 3-4 hours to Phakding (2,610m). Day 2: Cross suspension bridges and climb steeply to Namche Bazaar (3,440m) in 5-6 hours. This is your first major altitude gain.
  4. Acclimatize in Namche Bazaar (Day 3). Mandatory rest day. Hike to Everest View Hotel (3,880m) in the morning and return to Namche to sleep. This helps your body adjust to altitude. Visit the Saturday market if timing works.
  5. Trek to Tengboche (Day 4). 5-6 hour trek to Tengboche Monastery (3,860m). Mostly downhill to Dudh Kosi river, then steep climb up. Visit the monastery for evening prayers at 3pm if you arrive in time.
  6. Continue to Dingboche (Day 5). 6-7 hour trek to Dingboche (4,410m). Pass through rhododendron forests and across several bridges. The landscape becomes more barren as you gain altitude.
  7. Second acclimatization day in Dingboche (Day 6). Hike to Nagarjun Hill (5,050m) or Chukhung Valley for acclimatization. Return to Dingboche to sleep. This day is crucial for preventing altitude sickness.
  8. Trek to Lobuche (Day 7). 5-6 hour trek to Lobuche (4,910m). Pass the Dugla memorial to climbers who died on Everest. The air gets noticeably thinner. Drink extra water.
  9. Summit day to Everest Base Camp (Day 8). Early start for the 7-8 hour round trip to EBC (5,364m). Trek via Gorak Shep (5,170m) where you'll drop your main pack. EBC itself is just a sign and seasonal tents. Take photos and return to Gorak Shep.
  10. Optional Kala Patthar sunrise (Day 9). Climb Kala Patthar (5,545m) for sunrise views of Everest. This is the best viewpoint on the trek. Takes 2-3 hours up from Gorak Shep, then begin descent to Pheriche.
  11. Descend to Lukla (Days 10-12). Retrace your route: Pheriche to Tengboche (Day 10), Tengboche to Namche (Day 11), Namche to Lukla (Day 12). Descent is faster but hard on knees. Use trekking poles.
  12. Fly back to Kathmandu (Day 13). Morning flight from Lukla to Kathmandu. Flights are often delayed by weather, so don't book international connections the same day. Have a buffer day in Kathmandu.
How fit do I need to be for the EBC trek?
You should be able to hike 6-8 hours per day carrying a daypack. Train by hiking hills with a 10kg pack for 3-4 months before your trip. No technical climbing skills needed, but good cardiovascular fitness is essential.
What happens if I get altitude sickness?
Descend immediately if you have severe symptoms like confusion, loss of coordination, or difficulty breathing. Most teahouses have basic first aid. Helicopter rescue is possible but costs $5,000-8,000 and requires insurance that covers high-altitude rescue.
Can I do this trek without a guide?
Yes, the route is well-marked and teahouses are frequent. However, a guide costs only $25-35 per day and provides safety, local knowledge, and cultural insight. Many trekkers hire a porter-guide combination.
How cold does it get?
Temperatures at EBC range from -10°C to -20°C (14°F to -4°F) in the morning. Daytime can warm to 10°C (50°F) in sunny, sheltered spots. October-November and March-May have the most stable weather.
What if flights to Lukla are cancelled?
Weather delays are common. Have 2-3 buffer days in your schedule. Alternative is a 4-5 day drive to Jiri and trek from there (adds 6-8 days total). Some operators use helicopter shuttles when flights are backed up.
