Planning Visa Requirements for Multi-Country Business Trips
Create a centralized spreadsheet tracking entry requirements for every passport you hold and every stop on your itinerary. Verify visa-free transit rules and business activity exemptions at least 60 days before your departure date.
- Map your technical entry requirements. List every country in order of travel. Check the official embassy website for each destination specifically for 'business visitor' vs. 'work permit' classifications. Most business trips fall under visa-exempt or e-visa categories, but verify the exact definition of 'business activities' (e.g., attending meetings is usually fine; signing contracts or consulting may require a work visa).
- Check your passport validity and blank pages. Most countries require at least 6 months of validity beyond your intended departure date and at least two blank visa pages per destination. If you are hitting more than three countries, order a second passport or a 52-page document if your country offers one.
- Group your applications by processing time. Identify which countries require physical embassy visits, which offer e-visas (usually 3-7 day turnaround), and which offer visa-on-arrival. Prioritize the physical applications first, as they often require you to surrender your passport.
- Verify transit visa rules. Even if you are only in a country for an 8-hour layover, check if you need a transit visa. Some countries require this if you leave the international transit zone or if you are switching between two different terminal buildings.
- Can I use an e-visa for all countries?
- No. Many countries still require a physical sticker in your passport. Always check the official government immigration portal for the specific country.
- What happens if I don't have enough blank pages?
- Airlines can deny boarding at the departure gate if your passport doesn't meet the entry requirements of your destination. You must have sufficient pages.
