Planning Your Time in the American Southwest National Parks

To see the major highlights of the 'Mighty 5' in Utah plus the Grand Canyon, allocate a minimum of 10 days for a driving loop. You need at least 1-2 days per park to avoid rushing and to account for significant driving distances between them.

  1. Prioritize the big hitters. Zion and the Grand Canyon are the most crowded and require the most time. Budget 2 full days for Zion and 1.5 days for the Grand Canyon South Rim to handle shuttle wait times and trail congestion.
  2. Combine smaller parks. Capitol Reef and Bryce Canyon can be managed in 1 day each if you focus on the scenic drives and one major hike. Arches and Canyonlands are near Moab and can be grouped for a 3-day block.
  3. Factor in drive time. Do not underestimate the desert distances. Driving between parks takes 2 to 4 hours. Plan to spend your travel days in the early morning or evening to maximize daylight inside the parks.
Can I see all these parks in one week?
You can, but you will spend about 30% of your trip in the driver's seat. 10 days is the minimum to actually enjoy the trails.
Do I need a reservation to enter the parks?
Arches and Zion (for Angels Landing) currently use reservation systems. Check nps.gov 3-6 months before your trip to secure entry times.
