When to Visit Vietnam by Region

Visit North Vietnam from September to November for clear skies and mild temperatures. Head to Central Vietnam between February and May to avoid the typhoon season, and visit the South from December to April during the dry season.

  1. Check the monsoon cycle. Vietnam has two monsoon systems. The Northeast monsoon hits the North from October to April, while the Southwest monsoon brings rain to the South and Central Highlands from May to October.
  2. Map your route by region. Don't try to catch perfect weather for the whole country simultaneously. If traveling North-to-South, plan for a 3-week trip to account for regional temperature shifts.
  3. Avoid typhoon peaks. Avoid Central Vietnam in October and November, as this is when the region experiences its highest volume of typhoons and flooding.
  4. Account for Tet (Lunar New Year). Check the Lunar calendar. During Tet (usually late January or February), transport sells out weeks in advance and many businesses close for 5-7 days.
Is it possible to see the whole country in one trip?
Yes, but you will experience varied weather. Pack layers for the North and light, cool fabrics for the South.
When is the worst time to visit?
October and November are typically the rainiest months for the Central coast, often resulting in travel disruptions due to storms.
