How to Do Tanzania's Northern Safari Circuit to Coast in 14 Days
Fly into Kilimanjaro Airport, spend 7-8 days on the northern safari circuit (Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro), then fly to Zanzibar for 4-5 days of coast time before departing from Dar es Salaam. Budget $200-300 per day including mid-range safari lodges and beach hotels.
- Book your safari operator before arrival. Reserve with a reputable operator 2-3 months ahead. Look for companies with 4WD vehicles, pop-up roofs, and experienced guides. Expect to pay $250-400 per person per day for mid-range camping or lodge safaris.
- Fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport. Land at JRO, not Dar es Salaam. It's 1 hour from Arusha where most safaris begin. Arrange pickup through your safari company or take the Riverside Shuttle ($35) to Arusha town.
- Start with Tarangire National Park. Your first park should be Tarangire for elephant herds and baobab trees. Stay 1-2 nights. Game drives work best early morning (6-9am) and late afternoon (3-6pm).
- Move to Serengeti National Park. Spend 3-4 nights in different areas of Serengeti. Central Seronera for year-round game, Western Corridor for river crossings (June-July), Northern Serengeti for migration (August-October).
- End safari at Ngorongoro Crater. Dedicate 1 full day to the crater floor. Start early (6am descent) to avoid crowds and see the most active wildlife. Exit by 6pm when gates close.
- Fly Arusha to Zanzibar. Book with Coastal Aviation or ZanAir for the 1.5-hour flight. Daily departures around $150-200. Much faster than the 12-hour bus-ferry combination.
- Split time between Stone Town and beaches. Spend 1-2 nights in Stone Town for culture and history, then 3-4 nights on the east coast beaches (Paje, Jambiani) or north coast (Nungwi, Kendwa) for relaxation.
- Depart from Dar es Salaam. Take the 2-hour ferry from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam port ($35-50), then taxi to Julius Nyerere Airport for international flights. Allow 4 hours total for this connection.
- Can I do this trip independently without a safari operator?
- No for the northern circuit parks. You need a registered operator with proper vehicle and guide. Self-drive is not permitted in these parks. You can do Zanzibar independently.
- Is it better to fly between destinations?
- Yes for Arusha to Zanzibar - saves a full day versus overland travel. The flight costs $150-200 but the alternative is 12+ hours of buses and ferries.
- What's the difference between camping and lodge safaris?
- Camping costs $180-250/day with tents and shared facilities. Lodge safaris run $300-500/day with private rooms and better food. Game viewing is identical - same vehicles, same guides.
- Should I visit during the Great Migration?
- Migration is spectacular but means crowds and higher prices. Best viewing is August-October in Northern Serengeti. December-March calving season in Southern Serengeti has fewer crowds.
- How many safari days do I actually need?
- 6-7 days minimum to see the three main parks properly. Less than that and you're spending more time driving between parks than game viewing. 8-10 days is optimal.
