How to plan Inca Trail permits and timing
Book Inca Trail permits 5-6 months in advance through authorized tour operators only. The trail runs March through January with dry season (May-September) being most popular but also most crowded. Rainy season (December-March) offers fewer crowds but muddy conditions.
- Choose your trek length and route. Decide between the Classic 4-day Inca Trail (most popular), 2-day Short Inca Trail, or alternative treks like Salkantay or Choquequirao. The Classic trail requires 4 days/3 nights camping and covers 26 miles total.
- Pick your travel dates strategically. May-September is dry season with clear mountain views but sells out fastest. October-November and March-April offer good weather with fewer crowds. December-February is rainy season - trails are muddy but permits are easier to get and landscapes are lush green.
- Book through an authorized operator 5-6 months ahead. Only licensed tour companies can buy permits - you cannot book directly. Check the official list at machupicchu.gob.pe. Popular operators include Alpaca Expeditions, G Adventures, and local Cusco companies. Permits are non-transferable and non-refundable.
- Provide exact passport information. Submit your full name exactly as it appears on your passport, passport number, nationality, and birth date. Any discrepancies will prevent entry. If you renew your passport after booking, contact your operator immediately to update details.
- Arrive in Cusco 2-3 days early. Use this time to acclimatize to 11,150 feet altitude, attend your mandatory pre-trek briefing, and handle any last-minute gear rentals. Most operators require you to attend a briefing the evening before departure.
- Confirm backup plans. Have alternative trek options ready if Classic Inca Trail is sold out. Salkantay, Choquequirao, and Lares treks don't require permits and offer spectacular scenery. The Sacred Valley train to Machu Picchu is always available as a day trip.
- Can I book Inca Trail permits myself?
- No. Only licensed tour operators can purchase permits. You must book through an authorized company - they handle permits, guides, porters, meals, and camping equipment as part of the package.
- What if the Inca Trail is sold out?
- Consider alternative treks like Salkantay (5 days), Choquequirao (7 days), or Lares Trek (3-4 days). These don't require permits and offer spectacular mountain scenery. You can also take the train from Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu as a day trip.
- How far in advance do permits sell out?
- Dry season (May-September) sells out 4-6 months ahead. Shoulder seasons (March-April, October-November) sell out 2-3 months ahead. Rainy season permits are usually available with 1-2 months notice.
- Can I change my dates after booking?
- Permits are non-transferable and non-refundable. Some operators may allow date changes if space is available on other departures, but expect change fees of $50-100 per person.
